Gaya Street - Kota Kinabalu Sunday Market

What is Gaya Market?
Gaya Street, formerly known as Bond Street has been the centre of business for over a hundred years. It's a long-stretch typical Malaysian bazaar selling various product ranged from souvenir, fresh food, Herbs, Potted-flower, Antique, vegetables, pets, and delicious Sabah food and much much more!!

Where is Gaya Market?
As you can see from the name, the happenings took place at Gaya Street, right in the heart of Kota Kinabalu. The street, which is parallel to Jalan Pantai  is partially paved and the entrance is marked with a very Chinatown-ish looking arch, at Dataran Desoka.
Banks everywhere! – Jalan Pantai and Gaya Street are in the middle of Kota Kinabalu busiest business district, so banks and financial institutions are common sights. The Bazaar begin from Mandarin Hotel to Old Town White Coffee.

From point A to B is the heart of Gaya street Sunday Market, it is a 2 way route, you can go and forth and visit different stalls! This place is especially design for tourists, where you can find plenty of interesting domestic made product. 

When is it happening?
Rain or Shine, the market will happen every Sunday! The vendors begin operate business as early as 5.30AM!! And it normally last until 1/2PM.

How to go there?
If you’re staying in the backpacker dorms at city centre, distance to Gaya Street is only a few minutes short walk away. If you’re staying outside the city, catch a public transportation to city centre. Most buses and mini buses will lead you straight to city centre. If you’re driving, it’s advisable for you to come early; parking spaces are super limited!

Despite it is a lazy Sunday Morning stroll, with good panoramic view and vast selections of things to buy along the way, It is also a perfect place for street photography. The pictures and words alone will never be sufficient to explain the uniqueness of this place, you have to see it and experience yourself. If you ever have a chance to visit to Kota Kinabalu, definitely design your itinerary to come to this Sunday market, It might be overcrowded, it might be hot, but it will definitely worth it!
