1st December 2012, i have organized a beach cleaning project at Tanjung Lipat beach with the name of University Malaysia Sabah. This project also aim to collect trash effectively and to maintain beautiful and safe beaches in this "Land Below the Wind".

This place is less favorite by the public because it doesn't have good facilities for BBQ, and not even have a toilet. Thus it became more and more polluted since nobody visit there and the government didn't conserve this beach. It is so sad to see the beach is full of plastic bags, the trashes did not left on the surface, instead it got buried into the sand. Which mean it is already here for long period of time already. We believe that the plastic bag doesn't come from the beach, it is actually rubbish from the river, and also from another island.

All photos were taken with Nikon D80/ D7000 with Nikon 18-200mm VR, Nikon 35mm f1.8, and Tamron 11-18mm.
Photos credit goes to our official photographer, Mr Seah Chia Yee, visit his Facebook to see more of his work and portfolio!
Can imagine this is the beach of KK city?
A group photo before we start our cleaning work!
With more than a week preparation, i created this project and urge the public and also UMS students to join this program by raising awareness. Maybe the effort is not enough, me and my group member only manage to find 40people to join this activity. Special Thanks to Liza - my house lady who helped to prepare sandwiches and promote this project to her brothers and sisters from the church. It will not be so successful without her commitment!
Our brothers from the States did not hesitate to help this project out!
We started the activity by giving a simple briefing about the aim and objectives of this project, followed by distributing refreshment and drinks. Then we give every participants gloves and plastic bag to collect the trashes. We started approximately at 0830, sooner or later other participants arrive to the place too!
Everyone have been very participative throughout the project, we chat, and spend good time together doing something meaningful.

It is really sad to see this beach surrounded by countless pieces of rubbish, no one really bother about this beach. The pollution will not only affect marine life such as turtle, it also dangerously affecting tourism in Kota Kinabalu. If the beach is so dirty, tourists will have bad perception toward KK beaches, through word of mouth, no one will like to visit to our country in the future! The government should really do something about this!

After 2 and a half hours of cleaning work, the weather got really warm and we have to stop working on it. We felt so relief and proud to see how much rubbish we have collected, more than 10Bags of rubbish weighted more than 100KGs have been collected throughout this activity! We work hard under the hot sun and we felt satisfied with our contribution. Nothing beats the determination of the participants, they wanted to continue but i promised them that we will have second round of beach cleaning in near future, then only they stop!

Gathering all the trashes.
i can't even carry a bag of trashes, its sooo heavy!

There will be a volunteer beach cleaning happening soon at Kota Kinabalu.
Spot the State mosque on the far right? Don't be surprise, This is KK beach!

Time: 0800 - 1200*
Date Proposed: 1st December 2012 (Saturday)
Venue: Tanjung Lipat Beach (Next to Malay Food court, before bridge to Menara Tun Mustapha)
*Subject to change depend on the amount of rubbish

Hosted by group of volunteers from University Malaysia Sabah, the objective is to conserve the environment and healthy beach in our country with our very limited source of power. This project also aim to collect trash effectively and to maintain beautiful and safe beaches in this "Land Below the Wind".

Everyone play their role in this project, regardless you're Malaysian, or tourists happen to be in Kota Kinabalu. This cleanup provide everyone opportunity to lend a helping hand to keep our local shores tidy. The participants can indirectly given the education in taking care of the environment and doing their parts in making the beach a better place for the living organisms in the coastal areas. Environmental conservation awareness like this one should be instilled in children while they are still young, nevertheless not too late for normal adult to be exposed to.

All cleaning supplies will be provided, so volunteers are welcome to just show up (Those younger than 12 need to be accompanied by their parents or guardians). It is more advisable to pre- register by sending an email to Basnojj12@gmail.com so that the committee can estimate numbers of participants for this project.

Attendees should plan on bringing their own drinking water as well as a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

Volunteers should plan to meet directly at the destination (Point B). The place where the cleaning process will be carry on.

The committee hope that if this project successfully launch, this can become a periodical project every year. (e.g. every Monthly/ Quarterly) Full support from the Kota Kinabalu Community is greatly appreciated!
It will be a scenic view without these trashes and rubbish.
The rubbish were buried and integrated with the sand. They have been here for long while.
Of course, we can generate more ideas on how to conserve our environment, such as organizing campaign aiming students around Kota Kinabalu about the importance and consequences of trash to our society; Organize the cleanup project every 3months or other relevant period; Recycle the trashes and turn them into $$. We need YOUR Ideas!

We looking forward for your participation! Do send us email if you are interested to join.
